Dune

By Frank Herbert. He IS the Kwisatz Haderach! He has taken the gom jabbar... A must read for all sci-fi buffs. Join Paul Artedies on his quest on self discovery. Recommended by MSN NicknameInsania2016, 12/2/1999.

Elric of Melnibone

By Michael Moorcock. "Arioch aid me in my time of need, from this side my sword doth bleed, The Dukes of Hell they come, Arioch aid me or my life is done!" Follow the many journeys of Elric the last of his folk? Wielding a sentient, and dangerously chaotic Sword Stormbringer, see Elric battle all manner of demons and beasts from places never dreamed of, watch him call upon the dark powers of his ancestral heritage... Recommended by Vinny the Elf , 1/4/2000.

Lord of The Rings Trilogy

By J.R.R. Tolkien. A must read for all of you Fantasy Gamers... Go and discover your roots! Recommended by MSN NicknameInsania2016, 11/9/1999.

Mythago Wood

By Robert Holdstock. An ancient wood, a mysterious path. An earthy novel that is part mystery and very deep. Recommended by Vinny the Elf , 1/4/2000.

Saga of Old City(Book#1 of Gord of Greyhawk series)

By Gary Gygax (as if ye didn't know). Gord is my #1 all time favorite character, and this saga is my favorite story of all time(above Lord of the Rings). This story just gets better and better, each chapter drawing you deeper and deeper into the mystery of the street urchin turned Legend. This is the only book I have ever bought more than once(4 times actually, I have travelled a lot and found times when I wanted to read it but had left the last copy in another country) and only the 2nd book I have read more than once, it is such a Brilliant story. A must read. Recommended by Vinny the Elf , 1/4/2000.

Starship Troopers

By Robert Heinlein.
A story with a moral warning for 2000 America.. written in the 1950's. A far cry from Hollywood's "Lets all look sexy while we blow up the bugs to newsflashes reminescent of bad 1940s propoganda" flic, this book asks a chilling question. 'Are we raising future citizens, or spoiled children?' And responds to the age old myth, 'violence never solves anything'. Hail! Hail! Infantry!
Recommended by Mauricilean , 3/16/2001.

Sword at Sunset

By Rosemary Sutcliffe. This old, out of print book is worth grabbing if you see it. The book is an historical fiction account of Arthur and his Round Table. Except, there is no round table, Artos (Arthur) faces real problems, such as horse breeding, and everything is more . . . barbaric. Plus, there are strange hobbit-like creatures who live in the forest, and Artos's sword is engraved with "Imperator," the Latin title of all Roman sovereigns. A superb tale of the Dark Ages. Recommended by xahx , 4/3/2000.

The Black Company

By Glen Cook. Excellent series. I saw this recommended by Gary Gygax in an old issue of Dragon. I picked it up and love it! Recommended by Mikull , 11/13/1999.

The Dragonbone Chair ( Book one of Memory, Sorrow, and Thron)

By Tad Williams. I have never read a fantasy book that could match this one in scope. This series is by far my favorite, and I give it a must read!. Recommended by Matrix Dunjeon , 6/28/2000.

The Dying Earth (Series)

By Jack Vance. These are the basis for much of what we do here; they are some of the greatest works of fantasy literature written by mortal man. The books of this series are "The Dying Earth", "The Eyes of the Overworld", "Cugel's Saga", and "Rhialto the Marvellous". May they bring you enlightenment. As a side note, I would like to comment on the selection of "The Wheel of Time" series for recommended books list, as follows: Robert Jordan is a revolting hack. His rank and ill-written garbage is the single greatest blot on the face of fantasy today. His entire cast of "characters," if boiled down to those poor grains of halfway-decent writing that lies at their core, would not fill even the finger of the Grey Mouser's glove. Jordan's plot is insipid, his ideas unoriginal, his writing lousy, and his "heroes" overpowered. The abilities exhibited by the pointless cardboard cut-outs that he pridefully calls characters are akin, in levels of appropriateness, to strapping cruise missiles on marshmallows. On a brighter note, he does write better than Rose Estes. May the gods of literature pity us in these fell times. PS: I apologize for the rant, but the inclusion of the WoT series on any serious list of recommended books is an affront that I cannot ignore. Recommended by N. Wentz , 3/8/2000.

The Hitchhickers guide to the galaxy

By Douglas Adams. Who hasnt read this trilogy in four volumes? Time for another stab at it... Recommended by zappa , 1/9/2000.

The Runelords Series

By David Farland. A very exciting series with a unique magic system. This book is not only a great read, but it forces you to ask many questions about ethics. For example: is doing something "evil" acceptible if it ultimately does "good"? The author presents his story, and if that's all you are after--a good story--you'll be satisfied, but if you want more from a book than merely entertainment, I think you'll really like this series.Check out the series website too! Recommended by Gambit , 11/30/1999.

The Sword of Shannara

By Terry Brooks. I cannot say enough good things about this book! Many people say it is like "The Lord of The Rings" but i don't think so. On the surface, maybe, but not in total! This was the FIRST fantasy novel to make it to the New York Times Best Seller list. Read this book, and tell Alanon that Matrix sent you!! Recommended by Matrix Dunjeon , 7/6/2000.

The Weel of Time

By Robert Jordan. Excellent serie. Jordan's books are well written (better that this comment :-) ) and you really get the feel to know the characters. It's a must for anybody that likes fantasy books like Lord of the Rings. Recommended by Nakoliss , 11/11/1999.

The Winter King A Novel of Arthur

By Bernard Cornwell. The best/funest thing to read about for me is King Arthur, with Sir Lancelot and Guivevere and let us not forget Merlin. (I don't even care who wroteit)BUT this is one of my favorites and I have read many versions. I recommend it to folks that like to read about King Arthur. :) Recommended by Dragonweap , 3/23/2000.
